The agelessness of the Holy Scriptures never ceases to astound. In a snapshot of a story, lessons and hacks for postmodern living spring out, laying out principles that, though appearing almost simplistic, ingeniously chart a pathway for the highest quality of life and personal development.
One prophet is told by an industrious protégé that an iron axehead has plopped into the river, lost it forever. A day in the life of a riverfront peasant builder it seems, until we find out that the axehead was borrowed. What to do now? The prophet Elisha simply cuts a piece of stick from a tree branch and tosses it into the river at around the same spot of the loss, and out plops the axehead… floating towards its current possessor.
This was a miracle, no less. But also a lesson for us today; That the weightier values that make for successful living only return to the fore when we intentionally ditch the hollower values we have allowed to subsist and mushroom around us without care.
In the story, Elisha uses something light (wood) to recover something heavy (iron). This powerful metaphor teaches us that to reclaim our weightier values, we must first return to simplicity. Like; Simplify our schedules to recover our sense of purpose. Reduce digital distractions to restore deep relationships. Designate quiet time with God to rediscover spiritual awareness. Embrace humility to regain ethical clarity…you get the gist.
In all, if we waltz through life subsisting with hollow values and habits, the weightier kind of life will be, at best, a mirage, something we view and admire and yearn for from afar but never arrive at.
Its time to search out and ditch hollowness for a much richer weightier life that resonates trans generationally.
